I remember as a very young child that all ladies wore hats with dotted veils and white gloves to church. Now, it’s such a grey area; obscured from memory and plain sight.
A smooth, fresh, laughing face, the sleek angularity of a new building, a dotted veil worn by a woman coming out of church. Years later when the young face is wrinkled and the modern building looks corny and nobody wears veils anymore these photographs tell a story. And who could have guessed what that story would be? The melancholy of time inheres in photographs, in the resemblance that no longer resembles.

A wonderful portrait. I remember that too. I even had a pair of white gloves that I wore to Sunday School. A few years ago when my sister and I were cleaning out our parent’s house, we found a large suitcase and inside were so many hats with veils that belonged to my mother. (And the biggest hatpins. I don’t remember them being so big!)
That is quite lovely.
Magnifique, effectivement autrefois les femmes portaient de jolis chapeaux.
Beau portrait plein de tendresse.
Fine portrait! Once upon a time, in my youth, all men wore caps (working class) or hats (middle class) – now virtually no one wears anything, except youth and baseball caps!
Interesting portrait that focuses on the hat rather than the face
Beautiful ladies’ and sunglasses, suits her very well. Lovely focus.
Thought provoking quote
Superbe photo Sherri, quelle belle prise! Bise, bon dimanche dans la joie!
Always looking for detail. I like it
Great portrait ! I do remember that too…
I, too, remember fondly the ladies at church with their fancy hats. This portrait could have been one of my grandmas at the time.
Superbe portrait de cette dame au chapeau noir et ce visage blanc et les lunettes
amitié
A nice and well framed portrait, b-w is well chosen.
it is so fun looking at pictures of yourself and your friends from decades ago. Once you get past the lack of wrinkles, you have to laugh at the fashions and hairstyles. “How did we think that was cool?” is on the tip of the tongue.
An excellent portrait!
How differently-dressed people go to Church today. I remember all those hats and gloves!
So very memorable, Sherri, even if it dates us?!
oh i love that hat!! i’m a total hat person, tho these years i had a pixie cut, hats didn’t suit me, but i’m growing my hair out now….
women were instructed in the Bible to cover their heads so that they don’t tempt ‘the watchers’… those fallen angels… at least it’s something like that.
nice picture, my friend.
Un superbe portrait très beau en B&W
a beautiful profile view, Sherri.
An image out of time. Beautifully done.
okay, I get this one completely! I too remember those ladies who wore hats with dotted veils and a straight pin to hold it on. And the gloves — yes. In fact, I remember having to wear little white gloves to church as a young girl. That was better than wearing makeup.
Great portrait capture!! I remember those days as well…so prim and proper!
