Still, there is something predatory in the act of taking a picture. To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed.
— Susan Sontag said that
Excellent candid. I do agree with the quote – I’m always a little nervous about taking street shots, or candid’s of people I don’t know. It’s going to get more difficult with privacy laws changing – we’ll have to start getting releases signed by anyone in our photo’s.
Just looking is kind preatory, I guess.
Beautiful tones and contrasts captured in this shot!!
Can I ever post a photo again? I don’t want to be known as a predator.
Une image qui laisse libre cours à l’interprétation de chacun.
In a world where people post endless selfies on the internet they are remarkably paranoid about someone else taking their photograph
We always are between the impression to violate life of people and the desire to share the testimony of moment…Sometime I don’t take a photo because the moment is theirs .
A successful photo with the text of Susan Sontag
Un superbe B&W j’aime beaucoup !
or in the case of the selfie turns places into possessions. Though I think in our view of the world Sontag is rather over egging the pudding 🙂
A colleague has informed us that it is now illegal to take pictures of people without their permission – interesting to see what that will do to street photography!
What one sees, the other does not see, but you saw a beautiful whole.
That quote described why I am so intimidated by the thought of taking people photos. I always ask permission. But most of the time I am too shy to even ask. I like the stark B&W of your street scene.
I like your image.
Yesterday I heard a talk by a street photographer – I’m afraid it still did not give me the confidence to go out and take such images.
Quel contraste et vue quel rendu et iamge sueprbe captage de ces deux hommes en noir et en blanc et le noir en blanc et la blanc en noir génail.
Belle soirée
a wonderful b&w Sherri… Susan Sontag had a lot to say about candid shots of people….peter:)
wow!!! that quote is horrifying lol lovely picture tho, and they don’t look the worse for wear lol
i always find it difficult to take candid photos of strangers on the streets, Sherri.
terrific candid photo. I tend to agree with Susan for the most part. What she says here really bears much truth — most of the time.
Well, it’s a wonderful photograph in spite of any privacy or philosophical concerns.
