The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied but written off as trash.
— John Berger said that
i like your image and your treatment makes it look like an old scanned picture Sherri….
John Berger’s quote seems to be so true!
….peter:)
Powerful words uttered by John Berger! I love your processing that really evokes an old photo from the 1950’s.
On dirait une photo ancienne. Je ne sais pas si c’est le cas ou si tu as fait un traitement.
That is such a telling quote, sherri – it is hard to read it
that quote is so true, very sad indeed… those houses you photographed wouldn’t go to the poor here… here they would cost a half million and the poor can’t even find a place to rent anymore.
Your quote is very true.
Splendid quote to go with your gray image of modern poverty.
American poverty breaks my heart more than almost anywhere else, Sherri, exactly because of this quote. It’s said that the poor we’ll always have with us but…this is ridiculous. (sigh)
As always, a thought provoking thought well set off against your image.
did not know quite think of it that way, Sherri but it seems apt.
Berger’s words, sadly, are even truer today that when he wrote them! But our politicians and business leaders know no shame.
This is an excellent post, Sherri. And you’ve brilliantly created an old looking image to go with this very poignant, and true quote.
PS – I’m sorry I’ve not visited your site for a while – I was unable to pull it up…
I like your your treatment here, beautiful result.
The quote, like the image, speaks the unvarnished truth. Thank you.
Berger was a great writer and this is an excellent quote to fit the distressed image
Ces deux lignes sur la route cette perspective de poteaux et fils et les maisons fantastique vue.
Belle journée
Une très belle prise avec un très bon traitement !
I am in large sympathy with your quote, but the image you present shows well maintained if modest homes on a clean and well paved street. I don’t know the people living there, and I am sure they are less well off than I am, but I don’t know whether they would classify themselves as living in poverty.
The quote is so true. Great treatment and processing.
