The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied, but written off as trash.
— John Berger said that
What an interesting image, Sherri. It feels like it could both be a sunny day, but also a cold one.
Also, it looks quiet, but by looking at all those cars, I am sure it must have been busy too!
food for thought. and the remedy for this kind of poverty is hard to find.
SUch harsh words to accompany this image. There is a timeless feel to the mood of the photo.
An eye-catching composition with intersecting lines with the light standards and streets!! Great tones as well. That quote is very thought-provoking.
I like the image and the thought provoking words. Most north american poverty seems to be the result of greed. People in this world no longer take care of each other. What is in it for me?
The quote is a an apt description of the state of our nation. An appropriately bleak image to illustrate this state of affairs that wont be corrected for decades due to greed and a complete lack of leadership.
this is interesting but a complete change of direction from your recent images. This is a complex city scene, with much for the viewer to choose from ad the main subject. The lone pedestreian is the obvious choice, but then what to make of the myriad framing lines around him. And then to try and relate it all to your Berger quote raises quite a chalenge
A sad statement…
Good words and important words, Sherri, well selected from the wisdom of John Berger.
Indeed it’s the will of our societies (at least of their majorities) to keep up the mechanisms that elevate many to agreeable lifestyles, not a small number to unjustifiable wealth, all at the cost of those who have not the means to cope with the challenges on the way but get cast out.
And yes, this is an outstanding photograph, well adjusted black & white conversion and perfect toning to express what Berger’s words do tell.
Il est tristement seul dans ce vaste espace! C’est aussi ça la pauvreté.
The quote is uncomfortably true and the picture is excellent Sherri
Magnifique scène de vie
Superb composition and very hard but true words…
Bonjour Sherry, une photo à méditer! Bise, bon mardi dans la douceur!
and he was right
Certainly food for thought in your quotation.
The image has got quite a dated feel about it, very atmospheric.
Interesting story and a well chosen composition for this shot.
What bothers us is not seen, so we think it does not exist.
Interessting treatment in this image.
Ce personnage qui va traverser la rue cesfeux quelle sècne extérieuresuperbe.
Belle soirée
Great serene street scene with the lone man and the full bank parking lot.
i like the way that the writer described modern poverty… he is right on IMO…
but your image does not relate Sherri… there’s a difference between being old and being poor….peter:)
Wonderful processing. It creates a timeless image. The quote is so true.
i was thinking that the picture looks a lot like where i live, then i read the quote and felt ashamed for our country…
Beautiful and a great atmosphere .
The solitude of the individual in a shot.
