The wind blew; not up the road or down it, though that’s bad enough, but sheer across it. For a moment it would die away, and the traveller would begin to delude himself into the belief that, exhausted with its previous fury, it had quietly lain itself down to rest, when, whoo! he would hear it growling and whistling in the distance, and on it would come rushing over the hill-tops, and sweeping along the plain, gathering sound and strength as it drew nearer, until it dashed with a heavy gust against horse and man, driving the sharp rain into their ears, and its cold damp breath into their very bones; and past them it would scour, far, far away, with a stunning roar, as if in ridicule of their weakness, and triumphant in the consciousness of its own strength and power.
— Charles Dickens said that
The road goes on forever under a towering sky. Such a feeling of emptiness . Love it!
i like the composition of the road and the treatment of your big sky Sherri….peter:)
An area that evokes a sense of isolation, yet tranquility at the same time where the only thing heard is the wind. Great composition!
Amazing textures that give the wind form and hint at its icy power. It sure looks cold here.
As you know this is one of my favourite kinds of landscape photographs. And I also like the texture you’ve chosen: subtle yet effective. Dickens super power must have been his great use of words — excellent description.
A fabulous Charles Dickens quote! I love images like this. They make your mind wander and think about the places where this road could take you. A gorgeous image!
I love Dickens. He can sure get my emotions going. I loved being a radio version of Scrooge before Christmas 2020.
Love the photograph. Especially the big sky with the texture. Wonderful.
Stark image… with your signature “big sky”! I thought perhaps the writer was talking about Wyoming – until I saw it was Dickens! 🙂
I KNEW there would be rain in the quote, Sherri, if I but waited for it: “driving the sharp rain into their ears.” But I wasn’t expecting the snow! 🙂
Great descriptive quote and a minimalist landscape with no place to hide to go with it
What a beautiful minimalist winter landscape
Perfect quote for the image of bleak winter road. I’m glad I don’t have to navigate winter roads by horse and buggy as my Amish neighbors do.
Bien cette perspective sur ce ruban de route qui semble infini
A beautiful depth in this photo with an attractive position of the horizon.
when this came up, the horizon was below my browser visible window, so I though this was more nothing than the last one you posted!
But eventually I scrolled down and saw the sandy road and crop fields. An interesting landscape to illustrate the wide open spaces. I am not sure the texture was strong enough to have a positive impact on the sky.
This picture is so beautiful it makes my heart ache
SUch a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Superb atmosphere of solitude an infinity .
This reminds me of the last scene in the movie “Cast Away” … an endless road!
Even the sky is frozen. A very nice landscape
