What I feel about these photographs derives from an average affect, almost from a certain training. It is studium; whether I receive them as political testimony or enjoy them as good historical scenes: for it is culturally that I participate in the figures, the faces, the gestures, the settings, the actions. The second element will break, or punctuate, the studium. This time it is not I who seek it out. It is this element which rises from the scene, shoots out of it like an arrow, and pierces me. A Latin word exists to designate this wound, this prick, this mark made by a pointed instrument…punctum.
— Roland Barthes said that
This is a very pretty red brick building.
I really like the light you’ve captured on this building.
Interesting quote… and more so because, working in ophthalmology, punctum is a part of ocular anatomy that I inspect on a daily basis. Funny to see it used in this context!
A beautiful image of this red brick school bearing the name, Clinton.
That’s a very fine building, nicely taken, sherri
Man alive, Sherri. With the accompanying quote and what’s going on in America right now, this packs a wallop! Did someone say “public service?”
Quelle gare quelle couleur et rendu et ce toit fantastique compo et vue mervielleux.
amitié
it’s a beautiful building, is it ‘so’ red? or is it my monitor?
it truly is a very red brick like you’re seeing. it’s a historical structure; the old train station. then, it was used as the spaghetti warehouse restaurant for a short time. after that it was purchased for the Clinton School of Public Service and is next to the President Clinton Library
Sounds like a case of intellectually over egging the pudding to me, like the waffle surrounding much art criticism . I’m sure the analysis of picture impact can be put more simply and directly. The building is interesting though.. My first impression was a railway station 🙂
yes, it was the train station and is a historical structure
in the 80’s it was the Spaghetti Warehouse Restaurant
then, it was purchased and houses the Clinton School of Public Service and is next to the President Clinton Library
Beautiful framing .you give us a very interesting text from Barthes : we look at an image because that interests us, it is the “studium” then in this image something is quite obvious to us, pierces us, it is the “punctum “. Thank you !
Bonjour Sherri, elle est superbe cet école, magnifique! Bise, bon mercredi tout doux!
I love the glowing red brick of this, I guess, Victorian, building
SUch serious words today. I like this close up and point of view. Beautifully done.
a handsome building especially with the carvings on the lintel, Sherri. your processing is rather nice.
C’est très beau
This is a gorgeous building. The architecture is beautiful. The sign is the punctum. An interesting quote.
Roland Barthe in his Reflections on Photography gives some crucial observations about photography. Love this quote about the punctum. And the photo with its political understatement fits perfectly. And what a lovely building it is.
A quote that is a lot to take in. This is one beautiful building with a facade that is in tip-top shape! The ornate work above the windows really caught my eye; including the statement in the sky. 🙂
A lovely image of this really beautiful building. I miss Bill, too. We sure could use him in office now rather than Agent Orange.
lol, Agent Orange ! gotta love it
you’re the only one who seems to have noticed the typography in the sky. I also miss President Obama. America is in a very dark and scary place right now. We grew up saying, “I’d rather be dead than red” on the playground and so how on earth do we have so many people thinking Russia is not a threat to our democracy ?
gosh, the sign says it all doesn’t it? And I definitely saw the I miss Bill; in fact, I saw that first. I don’t doubt you miss Bill.
Lovely photo of this great building. You show it off to great advantage.
you captured a lot of nice detail in this tight angle
