Searching through old papers looking for something entirely different, I ran across a poem I’d torn from an old magazine.
The page; now yellowed with time is from the May 1987 edition of REDBOOK. When I read the words I’ve included below, I remember thinking, “This is how I’ll feel one day”.
Our two oldest children are grown and on their own and I understand the full impact of the words I saved from the magazine.
A person likes to believe the sting subsides through the years when in reality the sting is replaced with an ongoing set of rotating emotions.
pride. fear. loss. emptiness. joy.
night watch
I am taut,
suspended,
wanting sleep
but wide awake,
waiting for
the sound of you.
It is irrational,
but I can neither
cancel fear
of the unknown,
nor yet concede
that you are now
a man.

Beautiful complementary colors captured here! And the water droplets add an element of freshness. So is this how you feel today? 🙂 Being the youngest child in the family, it was hard for my mother when I left the nest. While she was saddened by my departure, I think it opened so many opportunities for my parents.
Beautiful image. We are fortunate that both of our daughters live close by and we see both them and our two grandsons a lot. However it is still difficult sometimes to realise that both girls are now in their 40s!
Lovely soft image Sherri. And such a powerful poem. For me, I tie together the feelings from the poem with the waiting, waiting for each drop of water to take that eventual drop.
A delicate image and a strong statement!
Beautiful macro
